About Ships

Class

A ship class is a group of ships of a similar (or same) design. For example, the Titanic was one of three Olympic class ships. Ships of the same class may be referred to as sister ships as was the case with the three Olympic class ships (Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic).

Sub-Class

OSAB uses sub-class to classify the configuration of each vessel. For example, if we build a Miine class vessel configured with multiple pods designed to be lowered to measure water parameters at very low depths, it would be a sub-class of the Miine class. In this example, we could name that sub-class “Altum” which is a Latin word for deep. The vessel would be a Miine class, Altum sub-class, vessel.

Type

ship type represents the tonnage or intended use of the craft. For example an aircraft carrier, ocean liner, or hospital ship.

Prefix

The ship prefix is a combination of letters, usually, abbreviations, used in front of the name of a ship. They have historically served numerous purposes, such as identifying the vessel’s mode of propulsion, purpose, or ownership/nationality. For example, “RMS” is Royal Mail Ship.

Example

Now if we put them all together we get this example:
USS Carl Vinson
USS Carl Vinson is a nuclear aircraft carrier (ship type) of the Nimitz class (ship class)
Its prefix is “USS” meaning “United States Ship”.

Vessel Classes

Miine

Status: Planning & Design Stage
Type: N/A
Vessels: ARV Miine

The Miine class will be our first mission-capable vessel design. Miine class vessels will be capable of surviving the ocean for between 1-3 months at a time. Miine class vessels will be equipped with an arrangement of sensors for oceanic and atmospheric data collection. The class is named after its lead ship ARV Miine.

Oceanum

Status: Future Design
Type: N/A
Vessels: ARV Oceanum

The Oceanum class is the successor to the Miine class. Other than general improvements and upgrades, it will have features that were absent in the Miine. It will have a submersible pod that will be lowered deeper into the ocean to collect more data and it will be equipped with a wider variety of sensors. In addition to this, it will be bigger which will allow more space for redundant batteries and solar panels and allow for more scientific equipment.

Vessels

ARV Miine

Status: Planning & Design Stage
Class: Miine
Type: N/A
Prefix Meaning: Autonomous Research Vessel

ARV Miine will be the first vessel to go on an extended oceanic mission. We will send prototypes into the ocean first but the ARV Miine will be the first to be on its own for more than a few hours or days. The ARV Miine is the lead ship of the Miine class. The name Miine comes from the Siletz word for “rough water” or “rough ocean” and it is pronounced mee-ne.

ARV Oceanum

Status: Future Design
Class: Oceanum
Type: N/A
Prefix Meaning: Autonomous Research Vessel

The IRV Oceanum is the successor to the IRV Miine. Other than general improvements and upgrades, it will have features that were absent on the Miine. It will have a submersible pod that will be lowered deeper into the ocean to collect more data and it will be equipped with a wider variety of sensors. In addition to this, it will be approximately a foot longer than Miine which will allow more space for redundant batteries and solar panels and allow for more scientific equipment.

Prototypes / Test Platform Boats

First Test Platform

Status: On Hold For Funding

The first prototype will be a test platform and proof of concept. Even if it is a hacked-together little boat that can float around a pond, it will allow us to learn the hardware and develop software. We will be able to learn how to use some of the navigational software and it will give us a chance to learn the in’s and out’s of tuning the navigation parameters.

Serenity

Status: Future Design

The Serenity’s function will be a lot like the first test platform’s. It will be a little boat that can float around a pond and maybe a calm river and it will allow us to work on the hardware and develop the software. It will have a proper 3D printed hull and will be a test platform for parts/designs/ideas that will go on the bigger ocean going vessels in the future.
